Lower back with pelvic imbalance is a common ailment among pregnant women, causing discomfort and inconvenience that can be debilitating. According to the Amercian Chiropractic Association (ACA), it often occurs due to the biomechanical changes a woman’s pelvis undergoes while pregnant, including the loosening of the sacroiliac joint and postural accomodations.
Changes Caused by Pregnancy
There are a number of originating reasons for these bio-mechanical changes, among them –
- the average weight gain of 30 pounds during pregnancy puts stress on joints and the pelvis
- the release of the hormone relaxin in the third trimester loosens joints to allow the pelvis to accommodate the growing uterus.
- loose joints require the muscles of the back and pelvis to work overtime to keep the body upright and balanced
- abdominal muscles, normally used to stabilize the body’s core, are stretched by the growing baby and are less effective
- changes in posture can put added stress on under-utilized parts of the body
And so begins a chain reaction of problems, including uneven leg length, compromised movement in the hip joint, postural problems and lower back and pelvic pain. Some women may feel unusual popping or clicking sensations in the hip area when squatting or performing certain movements. All of these symptoms can cause distress in the short term and potentially lead to permanent damage to the hips, pelvic girdle and spinal column.
Chiropractic Care and Treatment movement
The good news is that chiropractic has treatments and techniques that can mitigate or eliminate the type of pain and pelvic imbalance experienced during pregnancy.
Generally, chiropractic looks to realign the body with gentle manual treatment. Chiropractic doctors take a holistic, drug-free approach to health and wellness. Many women and their families will appreciate the health benefits of doing things naturally when it comes to pregnancy.
More Than Adjustments
In addition to manual manipulation and adjustments, chiropractors work with patients to devise exercises and stretches for the pelvis and lower back. These strategic movements are aimed at strengthening and re-balancing muscles, tendons and the skeletal framework of the body. And this can lead to a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery. Chiropractic practitioners may also share tips and ideas around sleep position, icing and other home remedies, and how to position the pregnant body to perform certain routine movements or tasks.
Many patients find that chiropractic is also helpful for ongoing alignment, maintenance and prevention, as well as emergency treatment for injury and pain. It can be useful to work with a chiropractor at the beginning of your pregnancy to head off problems that tend to occur in the last trimester, especially if you have experienced back or pelvic pain or injury in the past.
